Bishop José Antonio Canales is passionate about sustainable faith formation in Honduras

On October 21, 2024, Bishop José Antonio Canales Motiño, head of the Danlí diocese and Secretary General of the Bishops of Central America, visited the YOUCAT Foundation headquarters in Königstein im Taunus. The bishop is passionate about sustainable faith formation and sees this both as a spiritual task and a way to promote social welfare in Honduras.

YOUCAT materials are the key to faith formation

Bishop Canales emphasized the great importance of the YOUCAT materials – especially the Bible and the Youth Catechism. In his view, they are central instruments for strengthening the faith in his diocese. Canales emphasizes that any materials need to be affordable. For Canales, one thing is clear: “Those who don’t know the faith can easily lose it.” Counteracting this, his diocese has developed a strong catechist program bringing children, young people, and adults closer to the faith.

Four pastoral priorities in the Diocese of Danlí

Under the leadership of Bishop Canales, the Diocese of Danlí is pursuing an ambitious four-year pastoral plan (2022-2026) based on four priorities:

1. catechesis for children and young people – faith is taught early on.

2. pastoral care for young people – young people remain active in the church after confirmation

3. pastoral care for families – families pass on the faith

4. social pastoral care – active support for those in need.

Challenges and plans for the future

A major problem in Honduras is the growing influence of religious sects. Many people are turning away from the Catholic Church because they lack the necessary faith formation. Bishop Canales emphasized how crucial it is to counteract this trend with high-quality catechetical programs.

The meeting with Bishop Canales was an inspiring experience. We were deeply touched by his vision for the future of his diocese and his commitment to strengthening faith while helping the poorest. The YOUCAT Foundation is looking forward to supporting him in his missionary goals.
