Cuban bishops visit the YOUCAT Foundation headquarters

On September 25, 2024, a meeting with Cuban bishops took place at the YOUCAT headquarters in Königstein im Taunus (DE) to discuss the special challenges and opportunities in passing on the faith in Cuba. Religious literature is in short supply in Cuba, so the books in the YOUCAT series offer the potential to be a valuable guide for the local people and to satisfy their great thirst for faith and knowledge in the long term.

Catechesis materials are needed in Cuba

The need for reference materials is high, as missionaries are not regularly present and many people have to learn the content of catechesis on their own. Printed books and brochures could help to maintain Christian education. A good example is an initiative from 1998, when a simple prayer book was distributed during Pope John Paul II’s visit to Cuba, which proved to be extremely helpful. Today, in many families there are adults who have not been baptized but would like to have their children baptized. This provides a special opportunity for re-evangelization, especially through YOUCAT materials based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Portable booklets for faith formation

The need for small, portable materials, such as foldable booklets on key faith topics, was also discussed. These brochures could be easily distributed and used to make topics such as Christmas, Easter or the meaning of the seven sacraments easy to understand. YOUCAT plans to develop such materials that appeal not only to young people, but also to adults.

YOUCAT’s digital support: CREDOPEDIA

In addition, the YOUCAT Foundation offers an updated website that has the potential to connect people worldwide and win many seekers for Christ. This free platform could be a wonderful way to also reach believers in Cuba and provide them with a solid foundation in Christian doctrine.
This online reference work on the YOUCAT website is called CREDOPEDIA. The topics are divided into six blocks, which allows for a clear structure and easy navigation. In this way, the YOUCAT Foundation aims to create a broad knowledge base for people who want to deepen their Catholic faith and help them to make it effective in everyday life.

Conclusion

The meeting with the Cuban bishops has shown how urgently materials for teaching the faith are needed. The YOUCAT Foundation looks forward to continuing to work with the bishops, priests and catechists to provide valuable resources to the people of Cuba.
